Leprosy Is Curable — Early Care Makes the Difference

Leprosy is a curable bacterial infection — not a curse, not a punishment, and not something a person should have to hide. With early diagnosis and consistent treatment, it can be fully cured with no lasting disability.

Myth vs. fact

Leprosy carries a lot of outdated fear. Here's what's actually true, medically.

Myth

Leprosy is highly contagious and spreads through touch.

Fact

It spreads only through prolonged, close respiratory contact with an untreated patient — not by touch, sharing food, or casual contact. Risk drops sharply once treatment starts.

Myth

Leprosy cannot be cured.

Fact

Leprosy is fully curable with Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT), the WHO-recommended treatment available free under India's National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP).

Myth

It's hereditary or a result of past sins.

Fact

Leprosy is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. It is not hereditary, and not linked to any moral failing.

Early signs to watch for

Leprosy mainly affects the skin and peripheral nerves. Early diagnosis is what prevents long-term nerve damage.

🔍

Pale or reddish patches

Flat skin patches that may feel numb to touch, temperature, or pain.

🖐️

Numbness or tingling

Loss of sensation in the hands, feet, or affected skin areas.

💪

Muscle weakness

Weakness in the hands or feet, sometimes with visible thickening of nearby nerves.

💊

The Treatment

Leprosy is treated with a combination of antibiotics taken over 6 to 12 months, depending on the type diagnosed. This regimen is provided free of cost through India's National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP), and our role is to help you get there — accurate diagnosis, nerve function assessment, and consistent monitoring throughout your course.

If skin patches, nerve pain, or a treatment reaction develops during your course, our dermatologist can manage these symptoms directly, alongside your MDT — so you're never left figuring things out alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is leprosy really curable?

Yes. With Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT), leprosy is fully curable. Most patients are no longer infectious within a few days of starting treatment.

Can I catch leprosy from casual contact?

No. It requires prolonged, close contact with an untreated person's respiratory droplets — not touch, shared utensils, or brief interaction.

Will treatment be kept confidential?

Yes. Your diagnosis and treatment are discussed privately with you, with the same confidentiality as any other medical condition.

Does leprosy always cause visible disability?

No — disability is preventable. It typically results from delayed diagnosis, not the disease itself. Early treatment greatly reduces this risk.

Is the treatment free?

MDT is provided free of cost under India's National Leprosy Eradication Programme. We help coordinate your diagnosis, access, and ongoing symptom care.
